Customer Reviews

excellent analysis of our disciplinary state - Rated 5/5
An easy to read and thorough anatomy of the long term consequences of thatcherism and the neo-liberal project. From the attack on the principles of welfare to an times vicious assault on the working class, J and N offer their acute investigation by use of newspaper articles and other sources of carefully selected research. The book is never dull like so much academic narrative' and also never attempts none of the quasi-french philosophy that now so dominates british sociology. Instead a transparent text full of passion and detail is offered that can literally be picked up and read by anyone.

Assault on the Poor - Rated 5/5
This is a well-documented, radical critique of the growing authoritarianism of social policy in the last two decades. It powerfully argues that this has been driven by the needs of advanced capitalism and has been accompanied by an ideological assault on the poor. By demonstrating that inequality of income and wealth has, in fact, increased during this period it discredits all the politicians who have argued that increased general wealth would automatically benefit the poor. This book shows that we are now at a crucial fault-line in society where social values and market forces collide.
