Slow on Grammar, Fast on Speech. - Rated
I have been using this book for a year on and off and have found it enjoyable- but I have some reservations. Firstly the recorded dialogue on the CDs is very fast. This may be a concession to authenticity, but even after several listens and knowing all the vocab it can still leave me scratching my head. Secondly the progress is very slow in terms of grammar. Hebrew verbal morphology is quite straightforward yet no other form of the verb outside the present indicative and infinitive is introduced until chapter 9(page 157)! Thirdly there is a vocab list at the end but it is only Hebrew-English, and verbs are not shown in it at all but relegated to a separate table whose headings -and there are several- are not repeated on each of its 19 pages. Some of the exercises are frustrating and occasionally new pieces of vocab are presented ex nihilo. I don't want to dissuade anyone from using this book, but I would strongly recommend that you get hold of Webster's New World Hebrew Dictionary, which is essential for the Hebrew learner in any case. The style and layout are the strongest aspects of 'Colloquial Hebrew'. It is probably the best of its kind, but unfortunately that is not a positive recommendation.
LEARNING HEBREW CAN BE FUN!!! - Rated
AS AN ISRAELI,THIS IS THE FIRST BOOK I SAW THAT TEACHES YOU HEBREW IN A DIFFERENT WAY. IT GIVES YOU DAILY SITUATIONS, AND MAKES THEM FUN.THE SHORT DIALOGUES GIVE YOU THE FLAVOUR OF THE COUNTRY. I RECOMMAND USING THE CD IN ORDER TO PRACTICE SPEAKING AND UNDERSTANDING HOW PEOPLE SPEAK WITH EACH OTHER. THE DRAWINGS ARE FUN AND THE EXERCISES ARE VERY INVOLVING. THIS IS ALSO A GREAT PRESENT FOR YOUR FRIENDS WHO HAVE STRUGGLED TO LEARN THE LANGUAGE AND ALWAYS FOUND IT TOO DIFFICULT.
Brilliant book! - Rated
This is a brilliant book. I've used quite a few other courses over the years to try and learn modern Hebrew, with varying degrees of success, but this new one by Wang and Lyttleton is a breath of fresh air. It looks good on the page, the content is good, and it takes you gently but efficiently through the grammar of the language, with plenty of exercises on the way. Comes with tapes/CDs which complement it well - definitely to be recommended for maximum benefit with the book. Excellent choice for anyone wanting to come to grips with this language - for my money it's way ahead of all the competition (not that there's much!).
