So much better than 'Philosophy for AS and A2' - Rated
Firstly, despite the title, this is not a revision guide but more a full-blown textbook. It seems the creators of 'Philosophy for AS and A2' relaised that their book was far too superficial and so have made a new one, with much more in-depth coverage. Unlike the other book mentioned, this one is well worth buying.
Generally things are described very well and in neat sections, and the specification has been kept in mind (nearly all of the subheadings in the book are actually directly lifted from the specification, they have litreally tried to cover all those tiny things that usually pass by other authors). This book really offers a sense of discovery and learning as its coverage is really quite engrossing. Some minor criticisms is that every now and a then explanations seems rushed (although this is nothing a re-read can't cure) and that its coverage in sections could be called slightly 'bitty'. To be honest though, these can be put down to the fact no text book is perfect and I hihgly recommend it.
My advice to students of AQA AS-level philosophy is to buy this and 'Understanding Philosophy for AS level'. Together these books will offer you a complete comprehensive understanding of the topics. I have found it vital in philosophy to look at at least two different explanations/slants on concepts and topics becuase they can differ and you will need to synthisise and understand. These two are the best two books to acomplish that. 'Revise Philosophy for AS' offers a usefully alternative look on things, infintely more apt practice questions as they come from past exams and a more acruate coverage of the specification. 'Understanding Philosophy for AS' offers a huge amount of detail which crucially allows you to add that extra critical point in the long essays and a more narrative style instead of being a bit 'chopped up' like 'Revise Philosophy for AS'. Understandably, you may not be able to afford two big textbooks and if this is the case I advise you two borrow or have a look at both somehow becuase it will really be up to you which you will find more useful. If that sounds too long-winded, then just make a guess and whichever you chose will still lead you to owning a good book that will help you towards success.
