Misleading twaddle. - Rated 
To excuse this rubbish on the basis that's it's for children who otherwise wouldn't read about the so-called dull subject of history is no excuse for such nonsense. These people were our early English ancestors, though by saying they "bashed the Brits" only reinforces the notion that they have no connection to the English who for some strange reason insist on regarding and calling themselves "British" The word "British" derives from the name of the Brythonic Celtic tribes that inhabited these islands when the Romans arrived, hence their name for this country was "Brittania". Several centuries later the Romans left and our ancestors arrived. They gave their name, language and culture to this country - all of which we should be immensely proud of, as we should the name "English". Teaching our children that our ancestors were a bunch of bone-headed savages is disgraceful and misleading. I suggest that you take your children to West Stow Anglo-Saxon village or Sutton Hoo. They'll learn much more about their early English ancestors than they ever will from this nonsense.

Blood guts, chaos and violence-i love it. Go and buy it as it teaches you the history of the early english in a very clear and fun way (not just for kids)Dont listen to modern society, the saxons werent just nasty invaders, they were the ancestors that created small kingdoms out of what was left of Roman Britain that became known as England (and it was named after the invading angles from Denmark (often called Saxons by the Britons) also spelled Engles,and England means 'Land of the Engles', get it?, were not really British, its a lie!!!. And the normans werent french they were descended from viking invaders from Denmark (the same place as the angles, so were all related really) Learn all about the Negative side of the saxon and norman invasions/settlement as well as some laws that make far more sense then our modern laws. Our government could learn how to run a country better from this book. To learn more Positively on our ancestors try 'A Brief History of the Anglo-Saxons'.

Fun to read, but wrong about the Saxon name. - Rated 
The Smashing Saxons, a good laugh, as are the other titles in the Horrible Histories series. Just one little gripe though. One theory is that the Saxons are believed to have got their name from the long knife, the "seax", which was a favourite weapon and work tool of theirs. It resembled a machete. Although the Welsh, Scots and Irish refer to Englishmen as "sassenachs" meaning Saxons, the name wasn't invented by them. The Saxons brought the name with them from their old homeland of Saxony in Germany. In fact, the Welsh got their name from the Anglo-Saxons, "waelisc" which is Old English for "foreigner".

The Smashing Saxons was well, smashing. It was great! (but some of it you wouldn't like if you were a vegetarian, e.g:the farmers got cow pats as Christmas presents and that the Saxns houses were made out of pig poop)But besides that stuff, it was great!
