Ten Stars Twinkle Down Under - Rated 4/5
Once again, Baby Einstein recommend a book for a much older child ("36 months and up") than I have been reading this to, but my 10-month-old is fascinated by Ten Stars Twinkle nonetheless.

The illustrations in this book tell the story of a kangaroo and her jack making their way from the Australian outback to the Sydney Opera House, and they are guided on their journey by the stars in the sky. The stars are brightly coloured and they sparkle delicately, and with each page their number diminishes by one, until on the last page there are no stars, but a moon instead.

The text is in rhyme but very short, three words to a page, so it's more like a short poem than a story as such.

While the stars are very well made (only a tiny amount of their glitter has come off since we bought the book - my daughter loves to scratch them !), the moon doesn't always work the way it's supposed to. When it works, the moon is lovely, with a light lighting up behind it. There is a tiny visible mechanism next to the moon which, I believe, is meant to react to the page becoming exposed and read, thus making the light work, but about 50% of the time, when the page is turned (and even left open for several minutes), the moon doesn't light up.

Even though a baby can't yet understand the "finer points" of Ten Stars Twinkle (learning about numbers and counting, and about different times of the day), s/he will still love to play with the stars and the moon, and enjoy the colourful and lively illustrations. The moon lighting up is an added bonus, even with this special feature not working every time, I nonetheless strongly recommend Ten Stars Twinkle as a perfect bedtime story.
