A good historical read for an older child. - Rated
From the popular DEAD FAMOUS series of books `Joan of Arc and her Marching Orders`.
`Most people have heard of Joan of Arc, but why exactly is she dead famous? In fact, Joan started out as a very ordinary peasant girl.
She grew up working on her Dad`s farm and at first she didn't seem anything special at all. To get anywhere in her day, you really needed to be a man, and also rich - but Joan was neither of these things. And yet she ended up changing the course of her country`s history..........'
Written in a variety of fonts with humorous black and white cartoon illustrations throughout, this is a good read for an older child.
Effervescent Joan - Rated
I have read various works on Joan of Arc, from one of the earliest accounts from the fifteenth century by the German inquisitor and witch-finder Johan Nider to Frances Gies' magisterial 'Joan of Arc: The Legend and the Reality' . I have also enjoyed the novelization 'Personal Recollections of Joan of Arc' by Mark Twain. But I have never come across such a charmingly effervescent introduction to the peasant girl from Domremy as 'Joan of Arc and her marching orders' by Phil Robins . Touching upon virtually all of the salient points of her short and glorious life , Robins succeeds in being succinct as well as engaging and he does it with deft humour throughout. The text is further enhanced by the strong, punchy illustrations by Phillip Reeve. This entertaining account of Joan of Arc for children should be purchased immediately by parents and schoolteachers alike. Hopefully, children today will be so captivated they will go on in later years to read academic works such as 'Jeanne d'Arc' by Walter S. Scott, a rather more scholarly investigation into the Maid of Orleans.
