Amy Fleming is a talented young rider and horse trainer whose mother recently died while trying to rescue an abandoned stallion. Amy's mum was a famous horse trainer who founded Heartland, a horse-training centre for abused, neglected, and problem horses. In the weeks following her mother's death, Amy, her older sister Lou, and their grandpa try to cope with the sudden loss of the woman who was the heart of Heartland, but they're overwhelmed by the pressures of running the horse farm while dealing with their grief.

Fifteen-year-old Amy focuses on training Spartan, the horse she and her mum were trying to rescue, and achieves spectacular results as he turns out to be a talented jumper. Lou tries to take over the business side of the farm, but Amy fights every change she tries to make, even though Heartland needs Lou's guidance and business sense to survive. Over the course of the summer, Amy and Lou learn to respect each other's talents and contributions, and they strike a new balance that will enable Heartland to continue its work of "healing horses, healing hearts".

Horse lovers who liked the film The Horse Whisperer will appreciate the descriptions of training methods and alternative therapies used at Heartland. Young readers who enjoy series of horse stories will also like the Heartland series, which began with Coming Home. (Ages 8 to 12) --Marcie Bovetz

heartland series:book no.2-after the storm - Rated 5/5
this is a great book for people that love and care for horses! a great read beause really detailed and descriptive but not confusing at all! i reccomend it to everyone. also it is not to tiring to read because it is nice and short- but not really short! there are lots more to follow it so when you have finishged you still have more to read, ha ha!

This book is the best of the series!!! - Rated 5/5
This touching book is about how Amy copes with her mother's death, and how she tries to put aside her feelings to help the horse that was the cause of the accident. This book is totally amazing, and i would reccommend it for anyone aged 11+, witha knowledge of horses, as it contains rather a lot of 'Horsey Talk', thta non-horsey people might have difficulty understanding without help. I really like this book, and think that it is the best one of the series. My copy of this book is battered, because it has been all over with me, and it has been well read. A lot of my friends read the Heartland books aswell, and they agree with me in saying that this book is AMAZING!!!!!!

best book in the series!! - Rated 5/5
This is my favourite book. I love the way by healing spartan Amy also heals herself. Lou decides to stay at Heartland which is such a relief! Read this book!! I think these books are more 12+ because i re-read coming home when i was 13, i am 14 now and have read them all. I think the issues talked about make it more suitable for older reader but great books anyway!!

A must read for people who like horses, a bit sad - Rated 5/5
A must read for people who like horses, a bit sad but also happy too, also you must read if you are intrested in interacting with horses and having an understanding with them. I reccomend for ages 8+, need to have a bit of knowledge about horses otherwise you will be confused because it contains a bit of 'horsy' talk an exellent read!
