The Truth about America - Rated
Finally i read a book that tells the truth about the united states of hypocracy. Very interesting telling the story from the first Dutch, and english settlers to the slaughter of indians, slavery and the war of indepandance, the un-civil war and the stealing of half of mexico. And how america lies about winning the two great wars, they just joined the winning team and tried to take all the credit. A very good read for anyone interested in "Gods/Satans Country".
The USA Horrible History Special with mixed reviews, but what are a few inches......? - Rated
Considering other reviews, this could possibly be one of Mr Deary's more controversial books under the HH banner, but worth reading, nevertheless.
The `Specials' in the `Horrible History' series may appear to be on the expensive side but they are slightly bigger than the norm, standing at c 8.5" and this one has 192 pages, written in a variety of fonts with numerous black and white illustrations/cartoons plus timelines and quizzes.
The book is spilt over 9 chapters:-
Cruel Columbus
Savage settlers
Rotten revolutionaries
The nasty nineteenth century
The uncivil war
Potty presidents
Legends and lies
The wicked Wild West
The terrible-twentieth century
with an introduction and an epilogue
Written with the typical Deary humour:-
e.g. `Did you know..........?
General Custer was famous for more than his hair! He was famous for his bum! Custer was such a tough, long-distance rider the Indians called him `Hard Backside'!'
Tall stories? - Rated
It is a great book - funny, wise and informative - and I haven't got much to add to what other readers have said, except to point out to `A Reader' that he is surely mistaken. While there are a great many contradictory or downright contentious historical facts and events, I wouldn't have thought Robert E Lee's height was one of them. There are any number of reliable sources giving biographical details about him and one fact on which just about all of them that I have seen (and I did a PhD in American history!) agree on is that he was a great deal taller than most men of his day, standing at a shade under 6' tall.
Martin Sheen, who played him `Gettysburg', is apparently only 5' 7", and although in my opinion that wasn't the only thing wrong with his portrayal of Lee, everybody else in the movie towered above him so you could be forgiven for thinking that Lee was short if that was your only source of information. But if it was your only source, shame on you!
A good read, even for Americans! - Rated
I am American and we lived in the UK for 5 years. Right after we first moved there, we bought our son the book, The Groovy Greeks. It kept him entertained through a nearly three hour bus ride and he kept going back to it, so we knew we'd found a winner. My son has enjoyed all of Terry Deary's books and still reads them even though he's 13 now. I'd recommend The USA because a lot of American history that American kids are taught in school is a lot of "America is the greatest country in the world" propaganda. This is, needless to say, less biased in that area without being too anti-American. More importantly, it's an interesting and amusing book so kids will want to read it. I wish these books were easier to find in the states.
The new age history - Rated
Wonderful read, So funny and it flows with wee nasty bits of truth, couldn't put it down and I'm not a fan of history books at all, Most people from the usa wont like this as it's not heroising them, all this guy does is give facts and no cover up rubbish, for the price in its self you'll learn more about our yankie brothers and sisters and how they were and pretty much still are than you ever learnt truthfully about them in school,
pretty much the usa was made from spanish brits and mexicans with hate for each other, the usa was born through HATE so you cant blame them for the hate in their hearts towards me you and all, sorry Great book pure honesty and written so well.
