Inn keeper not an author - Rated 4/5
I enjoyed this book and although it didn't scare me much I thought it was written very honestly from the person envolved she is/was an inn keeper after all, not an author. It depends what you are looking for I like true ghost stories rather than fiction ones because fiction ones are always going to be 'over the top'to create immediate impact where as 'true' ghost encounters are nearly always, well 99%, of them are quite subtle! The evidence if you can call it that, builds up over a period of time.

The Myrtles Plantation - Rated 4/5
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I have read many of this type of "true story" and this was a good one. The descriptions of the mansion are very thorough, you know where you are and have a clear picture of where things are happening. I became involved with the authors hopes and plans for the hotel and then felt for her when her world starts to fall apart courtesy of The Myrtles. I found some of the descriptions of events really quite scarey, especially the forced entry into the house at night by persons unseen. She gives you background and history and you understand why things are happening. I also found it quite frightening that certain things still go on in modern day America, quite an eye opener in many ways especially regarding The Klan. This book certainly gives meaning to "be careful what you wish for.............". Buy it, I think you'll enjoy it.

Infantile and boring. - Rated 1/5
I recently succumbed to an urge to read about and explore the many and varied cases of supernatural behaviour that have been regularly reported over the years. I purchased three or four books on the subject, and I read this one first. I can only say that I hope the others have more to them.

The book is a litany of encounters, one after another, with occasional author comment on her reactions - reactions that sound stilted and wooden and have no consistency to them. Its tiny paragraphs are almost childlike in their presentation ... and then I saw this, and then I saw this, and then I saw this. If there is a power in the plantation house, there is no power in the description of it. The dialogue is basic with no ring of truth, in fact, it reads like the result of a second rate imagination. Because the writing is so sterile and bland, there is no build of suspense or feeling of atmosphere at all. There is nothing here that raises a hair on one's neck or even motivates one to turn the page. And there is no scientific evaluation of the events listed (I hesitate before I call the events 'described').

The writing here is just plain bad, and the editor is not much better. At one point a (young) character who enjoyed the kitchen was described as 'a venerable cook' ?????

Given the number of ghosts Ms Kermeen claims to have witnessed, this story should have been a 'shoe in' smash hit. Instead it is reduced to a boring, never to be read again, table leg prop.

If you want an infantile list of vaguely spooky things, then this is the book for you. If you want a believable account, well written, with atmosphere and gathering suspense, with descriptions that stir the imagination, and chapters that leave you wanting more, then you will not find it here. I hesitate to give it even one star.

the myrtles plantation - Rated 5/5
When I first got this book I suspected that it was going to be like many of the supposed 'true haunting' accounts I've read in the past.

I was in for a surprise! I could not put this book down and would recommend it to anyone who wants to be whisked off to a world of shadowy figures and footsteps in the night.

A very enjoyable book.

A huge disappointment - Rated 1/5
As the true story of America's most haunted house, I expected something really scary. But instead, the book is pretty flat and boring. It reads like a cheap novel and it took me over two weeks to finish it, while I normally read a book in a day or two. Save your money.
