Traditional, pretty and scholarly poems - Rated I recently read this little collection on holiday in North Wales and it was a very pleasant experience. This is traditional poetry par excellence, devoting much of it's subject matter to love, romance and nature, lamenting in particular over his unconsumated relationship with the beautiful and intelligent Maud Gonne, a political prisoner of Yeats era. The result is frequently powerful: Yeats obviously experienced some very deep feelings and he describes these eloquently and with great skill. Reading some of the more nature-orientated poems whilst sitting against a backdrop of trees and wilderness, birds and streams, was a very enjoyable experience for me, as well as a profound one. Doubtless the iambic nature of Yeats poetry will not be to the taste of 'contemporary' poetry lovers, who love nothing better than to extol the virtues of poorly-written, meaningless tripe, calling it 'avant-garde' and sneering at poets who actually have talent, but pity those sad individuals for the fools they are - Yeats is an accomplished, deft and sensitive poet who does not need gimmicks to communicate his feelings to the reader. His simplistic rhyming style works well, and he has a lot of worthwhile things to say.
