Customer Reviews

Half and half - useless on assemblers - Rated 3/5
As a scientist who worked in this area many years ago I decided I needed a new introductory reference book on nanotechnology. My first simple test was to see how many pages are devoted to assemblers, this is yet another book that doesn't even mention them. There's nothing in the index on assemblers, gray goo, Drexler, nanites, or nanorobotics. This means that it basically ignores half the subject - it's really just another book on nanomaterials, another book that ignores many - computing, physics, biological, and other aspects. - I know why it's missing, like many areas of advanced research assemblers are a pretty specialist area and there are very few experts who know anything about them.
Nanotechnology has enormous potential and much of that comes from assemblers and related work, if you want to understand the real heart of the subject I recommend Eric Drexler's books especially Nanosystems. It was written in 1992, but its very hard to find any book that doesn't either gush on the subject, knows nothing, or dismisses it out of hand.
As a reference on the rest of the Nanotechnology area this seems a fairly good book and really quite thorough which is why I gave it 3 stars.
