Makes learning Java easy - Rated 5/5
Java Concepts (4th Ed.) is a must for the beginning/intermediate Java programmer's bookshelf. The pages are printed in colour, which makes the content easy to follow whilst also making the pages look nice with colour photographs and diagrams. It aids the design too, with the included 'Special Features' which cover Common Errors, Productivity Hints, Random Facts and others.

The chapters begin slowly, introducing the reader to computers and the Java language, then they increase the pace to more advanced concepts such as mutual recursion. There are a lot of coded examples, and the end of every chapter has review questions, programming exercises, and a couple of more involved programming projects.

Unfortunately, Threads are not covered in this book. Additionally, I think some of the productivity hints are not necessary - I don't lose productivity by not following some of them, so maybe they are more suited to the beginner.

Despite this, Java Concepts is a great book, suitable for introducing Java to beginners or reinforcing more advanced concepts to intermediates.

This is an excellent book! - Rated 4/5
In my opinion this book is aimed at students who are at the intermidiate stage of learning the java language. I've read beginner books on java, but they only go so far. I wanted to know what interfaces were and how inner and anonymous classes work. This book has it all!

Learn Java in detail, with ease. - Rated 5/5
This book is essential to learn to program with Java2, with a detailied covering of the language. It starts from the beginning and eases you through the building blocks.

It is extremely good at explaining concepts, principles, syntax rules and also commmon misunderstanings or mistakes.

It is easy to read and interesting enough to actually grab your attention. Technical info. seems to be keep to a minimum and with it goes the boredom. Its review sections are helpful and its excerises sufficient to test your knowledge andunderstanding.

Highly recommended from a student!

6 cans of Java without the plastic to hold them together. - Rated 2/5
Yes it tells you what you need to know about Java, but it is not so good at putting everything together and giving examples of interlocking code and classes.

As a beginner, I found it unhelpful (although recommended by my Uni) in showing me the way forward.

great for learning how to program - Rated 4/5
This book was recommended by my tutor, it is an excellent programming tutorial. However, if answers were provided self study could be made easier.

The books purpose is NOT to teach you java, rather it's to teach you to program using java.

The pace is well set, DO the excersises after the chapter and you'll have the confidence to take on the next.

Recommended definitely. The author is sound, also writing CORE JAVA.

The new edition does not use the ccj library any longer. It would have gotten 5 stars if answers were included.
