Good but we're in the UK - Rated
A very logically presented book and the underlying principles stand up to logic.
BUT, the only track record presented to support the 'magic formula' in based on the US stock markets, so how they would work in the UK (or any other) stock market is open to anyone's opinion.
OK, it's easy to trade from the UK on the US markets, but that introduces currency risks.
A good, and interesting read, but I won't be using the principles until/unless someone does some validation using historical UK data.

While it might be odd that most of this book is concerned with justifying the investing model (the 'Magic Formula') than actually applying it, it makes a lot of sense. You begin to see why this formula works, and how it's simplicity is it's strength and why it can be so effective. This means that when you come to using it, you do so with a firm understanding on why it works.
In fact it's so good that I know of a major investment bank where it's pretty much required reading.

Excellent. Mr Greenblatt certainly know's how to invest with exceptional returns over the long term. This book is a simplified version of what Mr. Grenblatt practices and I look forward with new found confidence and a new investment strategy to reaping above average returns!!

Before you buy this book you MUST try Penman "Financial Statement Analysis and Security Valuation". Completing Penman's book u will have not one but hundred valuation methods to bit the market. You will evaluate alone the stocks and you will create your own criteria. Overall the book gives three - four valuation approaches that affect a stock's movement. The good point is that the author is not far away from an excellent investment guide (always only for the very long term). If Penman's book makes you a little confused, then try this simple and rigorous approach.

This book is really one of those gifts that keep on giving. The essence of the 150 pages could easily be compressed into two pages, but those two pages would be invaluable to any investor who applied them to his portfolio. The sand in the gear is that success, though almost certain, is long term and requires patience and faith, applying the two screens explained. The book is truly little and though the style is undistinguished - what business book ever is? - it is easy to understand and easy to apply. Therefore I recommend this book highly for anyone able to understand simple arithmetic and possessed of the essentials required of an investor, greed and patience. I think we could dismiss faith in this context.
