Be wary of E.A. Wallis Budge - Rated Students of the Ancient Egyptian Language should be aware that the study of the language and grammar have advanced considerably since Budge's day. This volume may be of interest to the casual reader but better books are available. Fully agree with reader-review on how rubbish this book is!! - Rated DO NOT BUY THIS BOOK! if you are serious about Egyptology and learning hieroglyphs get Gardiner's Grammer: i am an Egyptology student at uni and that is what i used to learn middle Egyptian. For dictionary get: Faulkner's brilliant 'A Concise Dictionary of Middle Egyptian', which has references to most middle egyptian texts. Superb Book - Rated This is one of the very few books that is of importance to anyone learning egyptian hieroglyphs. although not as strong as Gardiner's "Egyptian Grammar" this book is still of importance, nowhere else have i seen a dictionary onm hieroglyphs that can rival this book. this is a great book,and should be used with Gardiner's "Egyptian Grammar" to gain the maximum out of learning hieroglyphics. Make sure you buy the second part of this dictionary to complete it. I would think this is a must for anyone studying hieroglyphs - Rated I became interested in ancient Egypt and wanted to know more about the writing. This was one of the books I bought, but make sure you also order volume II at the same time, you'll need the index of English words in the second volume if you are looking up how to write a word in hieroglyphics. They give a little history of how the dictionary was possible over many years of scholarly development. If you are a serious student of hieroglyphics then I would think these volumes would be indispensible. If you are like me and just curious then they will still be of great interest.
