This isn't the first book I've read by the late Egyptologist E.A. Wallis Budge, (I have many in my collection).
For the last 3yrs I've been studying Egyptology with Exeter University, and although the books by Wallis are a little outdated due to when they were written, they are still used as reference books, as well as being interesting to read to see how much we knew then to what we know now.
This book was originally published in 1890 and was called "The Nile" it was commissioned by a well known travel company who is still sending people abroad today, ("Thomas Cook and Son" as it was back in 1890) it was written for their clients who would be travelling to Egypt, as they wanted to give them some useful historical facts about the ancient monuments on either side of the Nile, between Cairo and Wadi Halfah.
Wallis gives a brief historical summary about Ancient Egypt, this book also describes ancient and modern Egyptians, Egyptian writing, its religion, the Nile and other aspects of where their clients would be travelling too.
He gives great descriptions of historic sites and objects, and he also includes plans of the ancient sites he mentions.
It's a great reference book for anyone studying Egyptology or anyone that wants to know what the travel experiences where like in Egypt during that period of time.
I found it a very compulsive read, very interesting and very enjoyable. Anyone who is interested in Egypt and its history will find this book very useful.
It was worth every penny and it's a book I will read again. It makes a great addition to my Egyptian library. :-)
