Good all round - Rated This is a very good book that puts art & cultural practice in a wider context (including as it does for example the influence of climate & landscape) by an author who is clearly very impressed by the various Andean cultures & doesn't write about them as interesting but inferior specimens, as did some other books I have read. She writes with great knowledge, enthusiasm and at times admiration about the various cultures, whilst being very much neutral when describing practices that might strike us as foreign, unpleasant or even bizarre. This is cultural history as it should be, writing about a culture as made up of and by the PEOPLE, not just the king & the male members of the ruling class. I wish the same author would write another volume of the actual history of the region - I don't think there is one nearly as good.
