Violent crime - Rated
I would possibly not have chosen to read this, but it was a Richard and Judy Summer Read last year and I do usually like to try their recommendations. Also my husband has read it and thought I might enjoy it! Well he was wrong; although I sometimes enjoy a thriller it is far from my favourite genre this was not even particularly thrilling in the sense that it was a good adventure. Far from it, this was just a novel about violent crime.
One weekend Tom and Kathy Meron's world is turned upside down when Tom receives a phone call from an old friend Jack Calley. They are drawn into a web of crime and the fast paced and horrendously violent action takes place over just two days and an epilogue three weeks later. The story is narrated either by Tom or by DI Mike Bolt a detective from the National Crime squad.
Although I was just about interested enough to find out what happened to finish the book, I found the violence altogether distasteful. There are some unpleasant characters in this story and one particularly nasty example of humanity known by the name of Lench.
I understand that Simon Kernick's research for his novels is always very extensive and they are considered to be very authentic. I know the world is a cruel and violent place but this is authenticity I personally can do without, so I doubt I will be reading any more of this authors work which in some circles are obviously considered realistic crime novels.
Oh dear - Rated
I'm sure it takes a lot of work to write a book but very little effort seems to have been put into this it all. It was very cliched and silly and I couldn't understand some of the braindead and unrealistic choices the main character Tom made. Also there was so many characters that it was difficult to keep track of whos who. I'm not a big crime fan so perhaps this is part of the problem but I just felt that the entire story was unrealistic and a bit sloppy.
Simply written fast paced book - Rated
The style of writing is very simplistic and, at times, almost feels patronising - in fact, when my husband read the book he gave up after 100 pages as he felt his intelligence was being questioned!!
I stayed with it though and, in fact, struggled to put it down. The action is incredibly fast paced and it almost felt that the words were getting in the way of the action, which is an unusual feeling from a book and not one that I'm particularly comfortable with.
I liked Tom and found his situation very believeable although there was a lot that was ridiculous in the development of the plot.
The swapping between first and third person made it very clear as a reader whose story I was reading which I enjoyed and felt great sympathies for Tom all the way through.
The ending was a bit disappointing however and I wanted to know more from the epilogue. The rest of the book presented the plot very clearly and to be left guessing at the end was not consistent.
Rubbish. - Rated
I read this last summer on holiday and it was simply the worst book I have read in a while- I am reading Kate Mosse's Sepulchre though! That summer I was reading my way through C J Sansom. This was contrived, unbelievable and quite simply garbage. Avoid please.
Crime Thriller at its best!! - Rated
Am not sure why people can ever slate a book like this. I was never into reading books but after reading the blur on this book, i thought it was quite interesting; and i wasn't dissapointed. There was never a moment while reading this book where i felt tired from the plot. The pacing is perfect and the dialog is witty, I'd definatley recommend this book to anyone looking for something to read. Could also probably make a good film script.
