A glorious read - Rated
This is wonderful heart warming stuff. I first read it a few years ago, and the other day spotted it in my shelf and decided to read it again. Despite the length it's so enjoyable I read it in a couple of days. The charachters are wonderful: the good ones and the bad ones. It's so well written they just come to life, Mr Stapleton, Rachel's domineering father, is so awful you loathe him, you can share Paula's pain over the object of her affections, Brenda is a wonderfully funny charachter, so dissatisfied with life and so bitchy.
Definitely one of Patricia Scanlan's best novels.
not her best - Rated
Although I enjoyed the book I have to say it was'nt one of patricia's best I found it to be quite long winded, predictable and boring in places.
A woman's touch - Rated
This book tells of four women's lives, finishing with a holiday. The book has four stories within which are connected, so you will not be bored with it. I enjoyed it and could litually not put it down. Although some of the twists could be predicted, the story still had cliffhangers and left you wondering where it was going to lead. In some places I gasped and in some places I laughed. It has what you want in a book. The bad points are that you don't always see enough of the thoughts is in the character's head. I recommend this book as Patricia Scanlin had told a good and enjoyable story.
Good Girly Read - Rated
This was the first Scanlan book I read, and have know read a lot more. I really enjoyed this book and found myself empthasising with Paula, although the 'unexpected twist' was not so unexpected for me. She really is a great writer and this is one of the best I have read. If you like reading the Cathy Kelly type books or Marian Keyes, this is the book for you. It was not a laugh a minute book but heartfelt and really modern. Throughoughly recommend this book to anyone.
A Bit Long in the Tooth - Rated
I think I've read every one of Patricia Scanlan's books and this one, quite frankly I found a bit tedious. Firstly, it's full of background detail and not enough narrative. Secondly, I found it a bit heavy on the religious detail. Perhaps if the reader is of the same persuasion it might not seem that way; however, whilst I appreciate the storyline incorporates this level of detail, personally I found it a bit irksome. Thirdly, the reoccurring theme in this and indeed, many of Ms Scanlan's other books, is the same - namely, bullying and recovery. And lastly, it seems that every character in everyone of her books has a bob style haircut! In my opinion, not one of Ms Scanlan's best.
