Customer Reviews

very entertaining - Rated 4/5
I thoroughly enjoyed this debut novel. I wouldnt usually read this type of book but im very glad that I purchased it. I found it very entertaining all the way through and sniggered at Bessy's bawdy remarks on her observations on her life previously and her new and rather peculiar existence at Castle Haivers. Bessy character is funny and mischievious and she treats her mistress at times with disdain, wonderment and loyalty to the end. Definetly a recommended read!

Absolutely brilliant - Rated 5/5
It is a long time since I have enjoyed a book this much. The narrative voice is superb; so authentic and engaging. I loved this. It's a great story and a real joy to read. It deserves far more recognition than it has had so far. I cannot understand why anyone would not love this; it's a delight!!

Great fun - Rated 4/5
This book is a pleasure to read as it is well-written, original and transports us effortlessly into the world of the heroine. It is a story full of surprises, twists and turns.A maid like no other, whose personnality shines out of every page and a mistress who has deep secrets of her own.Really deserving of the praise it got!

Fantastic Read - Rated 5/5
I really did not know if I would like this novel at all when I first started reading it. It really didn't seem like my usual thing at all. However, it wasn't long before I was hooked and before I knew where I was it was...sadly...THE END!! It is one of the most unusual books I have read in my life. One of the earlier reviewers has commented on its failure to fit into any particular genre but I actually like the fact that it's rather difficult to pigeon hole. It's different and it's quirky and that's good. I did laugh out loud on several occassions which is unusual for me. I felt intrigued to know more as the pages progressed and the end definitely did not disappoint. I will be looking out for more from this author.

Disappointing - Rated 1/5
I found this book vastly disappointing and not at all worthy of the high praise it has been recievining in other reviews.

Let me start by saying that this author is clearly gifted with the ability to turn a nice phrase and can write with some considerable literay flare. However they were never given the opportunity to flourish in this sluggish tale which seems to struggle in identifying exactly what it was trying to be - gothic horror? tale of life below stairs? the treatment of mentally unwell in the vicotrian era? murder mystery? I think in trying to be all of these, unfortunatly it achieved none of them and before I was half way through I was bored and disinterested. In the end this is a novel which had great potential but failed to achieve them.
