Body language from a female perspective - Rated
I bought this book from Amazon on the basis of the title and without any review available about it. Body language is an important topic for my students of English, so I am keen to find books that would help them.
Anna Jaskolka has been reading other people's body language in fine detail since childhood. Her understanding of clues given by the eyes is especially helfpful. She communicates in a lively style, so the book is quite fun and easy to read.
The book title is gender neutral. However, lack of gender balance in the authorship and on the cover give some early intimations that this is a book written mainly from a female perspective. This may not be any problem for male readers who persevere beyond the cover, but female readers may be left seriously unaware of the meaning of various non-verbal messages that males are sending or receiving in some of the situations discussed.
Jaskolka's evolutionary approach to the subject seems somewhat inconsistent at times. Despite the amoral tone that pervades much of the book, it was surprising that she can become suddenly quite moralistic about what is and is not acceptable behaviour by others.
This edition is not one I will be putting on the reading list for my students, but I think it will make interesting reading for anyone who is trying to obtain everything available on this subject so neglected by westerners until recently. A new edition under joint authorship with a sensitive but typical male could make this a much more useful book.
