Asimov Foundation and Empire - Rated
Good quality & quick delivery - better than the High Street shops! I would use this seller again.
Asimov excelence - Rated
Asimov is an excelent author; his tales are well constructed. The only drawback is that when the books were written the equality of the sexes was not established and this makes some of the commentarry appear politically incorrect. Otherwise a very good read.
Foundation and Empire - Rated
Just like the first book in the Foundation series, this second installment details the interactions between Hari Seldon's Foundation, posted at the distant edge of the Galaxy, and the various neigbouring civilisations as well as the far reaching influence of The Empire.
As with the first book, Foundation and Empire has a plot which verges more towards that of a political thriller than that of your traditional Sci-Fi novel as the newly establish Foundation cleverly plays off milatary stronger adversaries against each other in a bid for survival.
This is a great book with a plot that delivers suspense, intrigue and at times a bit of dark despair. Asimovs despcritions of the alien world in which the story takes place are vivid and the characters are interesting and well developed.
The book itself was a second hand copy supllied by Wiggly Worm Books. It was in excellent condition with only a bit of wear to the spine, which is to be expected from a paperback published in the 1960's.
Foundation Series' second helping - Rated
The second in Asimov's `Foundation Series' differs slightly to the first book in the fact that it is only split into two sections, with complete narratives and continuous sets of characters. However, this does not alter the pace of the storytelling and allows the reader to form longer-lasting relationships with the characters; especially in the second section. There are also the characteristic plot twists which we have gotten used to with Asimov's writing.
The second section entitled `The Mule' follows a newlywed couple; one a native of a planet called Haven from the Independent Trading states and the other a citizen of the Foundation. They go in search of a mysterious figure called the Mule who is intent on conquering the Foundation and uniting the Galaxy under his leadership. The fact that he is a mutant somehow allows him to manipulate events in his favour with the possible consequence of bringing the `Seldon Plan' to it's knees, and therefore the future of the Foundation and humanity.
Its the original "Empire strikes Back" - Rated
If you consider Star Wars as George Lucas's answer to Asmiov's "Foundation" then this is very much in the mode of Episode V. Asimov spent the first book building up his psychohistory paradigm just to knock it down in Foundation and Empire. A much darker and more intense book, downbeat in mood, and leading to the inevitable conclusion in Second Foundation.
