Short but Sweet - Rated
I would have prefered the book to have been longer but only because i didn't want it to end. It was depicted a love that i can only hope to experience. I would recommend, however if you're looking for a challenging read it won't be for you.
Peculiar but intriguing. - Rated
Well, I saw this book ages ago, and didn't really think I'd like it - ghost stories had never really appealed to me. But I got it for my birthday, and gave it a shot, and hardly put it down!
Helen is the main character - who plays the ghost - and the book begins quickly with her following her current host. The author goes on to explain her past, cleverly entwining it with the current, so we get an understanding of the background of Helen. When with her current host, an English teacher, a boy seems to 'see' her; something that has never happened before in her entire years of haunting. Of course, she develops a relationship with this boy, and it turns out they have more in common than you'd expect.
The pace of this story is fast throughout - I never felt bored or wanting to skip a few pages ahead, and I really began to like Helen, and I loved the clear yet detailed style of writing that Whitcomb uses. There were many times when I felt rally involved; and although the story is very unusal, it's still a romance at heart. The book changes your opinion on the word 'ghost', showing you an entirely different point of view (no pun intended o_O). I would automatically think of halloween and silly scary stories if the word ghost was mentioned - but this book offers another option, that ghosts aren't bad, and they simply guide people and don't bother anyone.
I'm glad I read this book - the only bad thing was that I felt it wasn't long enough, but I suppose that's just my opinion. The conclusion is powerful, and ties up everything in the book neatly, whilst still giving you the final clues to Helen's mysterious past.
A certain slant of light - Rated
I loved this book, it has quickly become my favourite novel yet. I can't believe it's Laura Whitcomb's first novel. It's very well written and drawes you in right from the start. I had coincidentially just finished 'twilight' when i started this book, yet I can't see that they have that much in common.
This book is absolutely Outstounding, The story unfolded just how i wanted it too, yet had enough differences to still grip me. I bought it on a whim before it had had any reviews and i must say that the five stars the other reviewers have given it are very well deserved.
STORY OUTLINE:
The main character (Helen) is a ghost, or 'light' who is forced to be attatched to live people. The way it is written from a ghost's perspective is done really well. It soon becomes a love story as she meets a mysterious boy who can see her. The story unfolds as the too struggle to belong to each other in a world where they are almost the only species of their kind, yet are forced to live completly different existences.
I wouldn't know what gengre the book fits into which makes me love it all the more. I would say fantasy / Romance / Tragedy.
I definately recommend this book to anyone.
A beautiful change from the norm, - Rated
There is no doubt that Whitcomb is a very good writer using eloquent language and description that touches all the senses. I don't know how to describe this other that a very quite book, it's almost like a secret, to read alone. This book had a very dark and sombre tone that has a beautiful catharsis to conclude. It is unlike the usual romance as the sexual references are very realistic and not drawn out.
I read this book with out feeling that the characters romance was anything other than a small role; Whitecomb's character relationships are subtle and not thrust in your face as clichés.
It is a book that I would recommend for people who really appreciate the English language and want something refreshing and beautiful to read as a break form their normal style of literature.
