Russian soul - Rated
This is a good book, not just a travel journal but a historical study as well, coming right up to the present and shining a spotlight on the real Russia, interior Russia, the Russia tourists never get to and from which most of the natives would wish to escape. The reportage of contemporary scenes in the small towns and villages through which the author and his co-traveller pass is excellent and spot on. If you want a much deeper and better understanding of Russia than you can get through travel guides, this is the book for you. You definitely will understand the Russian character better after reading River of No Reprieve. As for the beauty of the river in question, well, it is breathtaking. Should be read in conjunction with Young Stalin by Sebag Montefiore.
Depressing, but worthy of reading - Rated
A good read from Moscow based travel writer Jeffrey Tayler for anyone with any interest in Siberia. Tayler goes beyond the well travelled Trans-Siberian zone / highway ... beyond even the rarely travelled BAM zone, and travels down the remote Lena River from near Lake Baikal to its mouth over 3000kms away in the extreme North.
While the book is enjoyable (and worth reading for the Siberia aficionado) and offers a totally unique insight into a Siberia that is very rarely seen by western eyes (even by Russian eyes), both the author (who comes across as grey and monotonous) and his Russian guide Vadim grate on you at times.
For me, its a massive oversight or perhaps more realistically publishers cheapskatedness that there is not a single picture in the whole book. No greyscale pics, and no colour plates. Adventure travel through such a dramatic wilderness deserves to be documented not just with words, but with photography as well. An opportunity missed there. Otherwise I would have given 4 stars
