eagleton's best... - Rated ...from what I've read of his. I was surprised to see this remained without comment. I've read a fair bit of Eagleton and, although this is not a particularly original work - consisting as it does of accounts of how various philosphers have approached "the aesthetic" - it serves as an excellent introduction to the History of Philosophy from an interesting perspective. This perspective is that of a "cultural marxist" analysing approaches to art and art theory as they have moved Kant, Schelling and others. I read it quite a while ago, so my recall is a bit scanty - but I remember considering it kin to the equally impressive Life of the Mind by Hannah Arendt (which is also not so much an original work as a masterfully narrative of philosophy).
