Wide Ranging, Accurate But Lacking Depth - Rated This is a surprisingly wide ranging dictionary, with entries covering a vast amount of theological terrain. Entries are clear and seemingly accurate and to the point. Annoyingly, references to other terms defined in the dictionary are not made explicit by the usual [qv] conventions, leading to a degree of skipping around finally to nail a definition and its associated parts. Entries are clearly written and accessible to non-specialists [even if that does involve looking up several other terms along the way: what's learning for?] There is a penalty for the width of coverage, and that lies in the brevity of many definitions. The compiler aims at a three sentence definition: many are shorter. As a result, used alone, this could be a frustrating work for those seeking anything approaching detailed knowledge. Used as a dictionary perhaps should be, it provides an excellent starting point for further, more informed, research. One minor quibble: to a UK reader, there is a definite transatlantic tone to the book, with, one might argue, a slight bias towards US subjects at the expense of contemporary European ones. This is niggling: it really is a useful book.
