Britain's Most Underrated Writer? - Rated Raban may no longer fully qualify as a British writer (?) having upped sticks to Seattle some years ago but he remains one of the most neglected voices of modern British fiction. Better known as a travel writer (for such gems as Arabia and Hunting Mr Heartbreak) he's returned to novel writing recently with Waxwings and Surveillance. But it was his first effort - Foreign Land - that stands out. The affecting tale of a displaced colonial expat struggling to adjust to life back in Blighty, the novel is a brilliant depiction of the dislocated ex-colonial who finds he doesn't really belong anywhere in the world. The answer? One of Raban's great themes - take to the sea. It's the one place that never changes, the only place an old man can really call his home.
