Customer Reviews

An excellent read - Rated 4/5
I enjoyed Tractors and was looking forward to reading this book - I wasn't disappointed.

I read it quickly, over a couple of days, eager to follow the characters' ups and downs. There is a gentle humour but also a darker side - like other readers, I will not look at supermarket produce, chickens in particular, in the same way again. The exploitation of the workers is shocking and sadly all too real. I found myself willing the Chinese girls to say no to the promise of the nannying job in Amsterdam.

I did love Dog's narration.

Two Caravans - Rated 4/5
I had been eagerly awaiting the arrival of this book after reading "Tractors" and have just finished reading it. I can recommend it, but I wouldn't take this for on holiday for some light reading! This book does not disappoint, although it is depressing in places, the humour of "Tractors" is there too. I find the narrative a little hard-going in places, especially those with the paragraphs with the dogs in capital letters. I also found that I would have to recap slightly to work out who was being featured in that particular part of the story. It took me a while to work out that when the narrative was in the first person, it was Irina talking!

Marina Lewycka is a bloomin' genius! - Rated 5/5
I ABSOLUTELY LOVED THIS BOOK! It's often quite melancholy but it has just enough comedy moments in it to keep the mood up. It's very poignant in places particularly about the hard times of migrants in the UK, and what's shocking is that I can totally believe the events in this book happen for real - probably on a regular basis! There are some genuinely lovely moments and some almost kinky ones! An absolute must read!

And if you haven't read it yet, you must also read A Short History of Tractors in Ukranian!

great read. touching and funny - Rated 4/5
I really enjoyed her first book and this one doesn't disappoint. The characters are great. I only wish it had been longer and a little more developed. I was sorry to say goodbye to the earlier characters.

Chickens and strawberrys will never taste the same - Rated 4/5
This novel offers a superb insight into many things, specifically the pitiful and vulnerable life of people who come to the UK trying to earn a bit of money and being brutally ripped-off in the process. I loved the fact that one of the characters, in fact the great hero of this story, was a dog. This novel is highly amusing and will keep you going until the end. I am a very picky, fussy reader, but I do recommend this one.
