Vintage Priest - Rated 5/5
The Space Machine is romantic Victorian fantasy, Chris Priest's homage to H.G. Wells. Conflating elements of The War of the Worlds with The Time Machine, and written in a style that affectionately emulates Wells, this is a jaunt through space and time to warm the cockles of any SF fan's heart. A Dream of Wessex is darker, more literary material that presages Priest's later work. Here are the first hints of the multiple narrative symmetries that Priest deploys so well. This is the protoype for the ideas that would find full expression in The Extremes.
