The best 'down to earth' from scratch gardening book - Rated
My parents had this book, and I bought my own copy in the 1960s. When this fell to bits bought the 'updated' version in the 70s, and now have a second hand copy of that. A wonderful straightforward no-frills book with excellent basic advice for the beginner onwards, written by a gardening enthusiast who wrote from his own experience. Some years ago we were faced with newly excavated steep driveway banks, so I wrote to Brig Lucas Phillips asking for ideas. He wrote a long and detailed letter (in his own hand) with guidance re soil prep, suitable plants etc. - how many famous authors would do that, and it's a measure of the friendly feel to the whole book. Highly recommend it - I am now buying a copy for the next generation starting their own gardening life.
A classic - worthwhile addition to any gardener's shelf! - Rated
This was my first ever gardening book 29 years ago that I picked up second hand at a market stall when contemplating the builders site that was the garden at the back of my newly built first house. It was an invaluable introduction to gardening. I used it to design and plant my very first garden and was delighted with the results. It sparked an interest in gardening that has stayed with me ever since. It became increasingly battered and yellowed over the years. As I accumulated many more fashionable and exciting gardening books over the years it disappeared to the back of my bookcase. I came across a more up to date version recently at another second hand bookshop and snapped it up. To my pleasure and delight I have been re-discovering its still invaluable advice and refreshing down to earth style - for example advising the beginner against the 'Fido's graveyard' approach to rockery design! Still a gem.

"The Small Garden" must be the best gardening book ever printed. I have had a copy for 38 years and unfortunately it is now falling apart after constant use. Luckily I see it is still possible to obtain copies, hopefully in better condition than my own
