Good beginner's guide to backgammon - Rated
This book provides a good introduction to the game. After explaining the rules (which come with most backgammon sets anyway), it mostly concentrates on basic strategies of interest to casual players. It contains many illustratins but, as they are just simple sketches, they can be confusing to understand. You won't become a great player just by reading this book - you will need to practice a great deal to understand how and when to use each strategy. A previous reviewer said that doubling is not mentioned. Well, it certainly IS in the copy I own - chapter 7 is all about doubling.
Anyone who knows anything about backgammon will know that it is ostensibly a gambling game. With this in mind, the author spends much time on the subject of risk, probabilities, and calculating odds. This is the most advanced part of the book, and I would expect any serious player to know most of this already.
There are a couple of things missing from the index: Direct Roll (p52), Indirect Roll (p52), and Fight Of Blots (p54), but otherwise it is quite thorough.
The writing style is concise, easy to read and understand. Despite the author's grand-sounding name, his take on the subject is neither pompous nor patronising.
I would recommend this book as a good way to start playing the game, but a competent player may find it a little too basic.
A good basic introduction to half the game - Rated
Nice introduction for the social player (and you will certainly enjoy the game more having read this book than if you just know the rules) but doesn't mention doubling strategy without which Backgammon is really nothing more than advanced Ludo.
Still, interesting sections on variants and the history of the game. This was my first backgammon book and it certainly made me enthusiastic to play and read more.
