Naive Generalisations. - Rated 1/5
This is a very mediocre novel, full of shallow generalisations. Everything is black-or-white, with no shades of grey allowed. In the acknowledgments, the writer states that she thinks that politicians are at least as hideous as her portrayal suggests, if not more so, then goes on to create a monster who beats, rapes and mutilates his girlfriends. So, politicians are worse than this? Not in the real world.

And the Lola character was written entirely in 'Bridget Jones' speak, which was irritating as well as unoriginal.

A giant disappointment. I have only given it a 1-star rating as there was no function available to give it no stars.

A charming book - Rated 5/5
As the synopsis says: "Four very different women. One awfully charming man. And the dark secret that binds them all . . " That pretty much sums up this page-turner by Marian Keyes, author of WATERMELON and SUSHI FOR BEGINNERS. Her latest novel is just as good--if not even better--than these previous efforts.

True, this novel has a gritter side and is more disturbing and deals with more "real life" issues than WATERMELON or some of her other efforts, but it's still packed with fun and frolic. There are moments that are hilarious paired with moments that will take your breath away. Such is as it should be with any good novel.

It would be virtually impossible to tell the story here without ruining it, but suffice it to say that Keyes is one of those writers (much like Kinsella) who knows how to craft a novel from start to finish. Unlike a lot of books that fall apart at the end, THIS CHARMING MAN goes straight for the finish line and then some.

My only complaint: I couldn't put it down and it TOTALLY disrupted my life. Would also recommmend the Kinsella novel REMEMBER ME? and the novel of great fun BARRING SOME UNFORESEEN ACCIDENT. Both are great, but THIS CHARMING MAN takes the cake.

Another great book by Marian Keyes! - Rated 5/5
Am bereft! I tried so hard not to read this book in a day (and into the wee small hours) so that I could savor it for as long as possible but I couldn't put it down and now I have to start the long wait for her next book! I love Keyes' books and this was another great read. More serious and gritty than her previous books, it still has enough quirky characters, great dialogue and zany laugh out loud moments to contrast against the disturbing and emotional real life issues that it covers. She struck a good balance between the two so that neither suffered and I was gripped the whole way through. I feel quite wrung out after it as you really go on a journey with all three of the main characters. I don't want to give away the story line so I'm not saying any more...

Brilliant Again! - Rated 5/5
I'm already a massive Marian Keyes fan and this book is no disappointment. Telling the story of 4 women all connected to one man - the charming Paddy de Courcy - the stories slowly unravel through four different dialogues. As usual with Marian there's a lot more going on than there seems on the surface, and deeper issues are dealt with in a perfect mix with light hearted fun.

A fantastic read and keeps you interested all the way through. (I particularly liked the style of Lola's story, reminded me of Helens emails in Anybody out there.)

I would definitely recommend this to anyone.

Gripping and brilliant, if a little long - Rated 4/5
This Charming Man has to be a classic Marian Keyes title - it has everything that you would expect - moments of heartbreak, daft but loveable characters and you feel genuine warmth and affection for her main characters. This book, I believe is not as entertaining as her previous titles but the subject matter is much more important and is written with real respect and thorough research. I enjoyed it immensly.
Having said that though I do feel that at times the book was overly long and certain chapters could have been edited without the real thrust of the story being lost.
However that could be just be me being nit-picky - Marian Keyes, in my humble opinion is still way in front of any other women writers in terms of storytelling and humour.
