A Must for A Level Students! - Rated
Ok, so this edition doesn't have the English alongside, but key words are translated for you as footnotes. La Casa De Bernada Alba tells the story of a house of women, trapped in the process of mourning for their dead father, longing for what lies outside... basically men, and love. Lorca presents us with the tradition of his society (epitomised by Bernada) and the unfair repression of women. There is a useful introduction, which should help with essays, if you want to start reading Spanish literature, this is a good place to start! Next try Yerma and Bodas De Sangre (Blood Wedding) to complete the trilogy. Good luck!
Garcia Lorca at his best! - Rated
Teaching this text has been one of the many pleasures I have been given this new term. La Casa de Bernarda Alba is, for a foreign language student very hard work, and for Scottish Teenagers of 16 years of age even more so! However, Lorca, being the poet he always was, has had my classes hypnotised for hours with the plot detail and character development that he evokes. The story is set in 1930's Spain and depicts the life faced by many in the Spanish villages of the time. It picks out one in particular, Valderrubios near Granada. Here the story of the family Alba evolves in to one of love and tragedy and more! The story is concise in its' three acts, although abundant in detail for such a short work. This is the jewel in Garcia Lorca's crown and what both myself and my students find heart-breaking is not the death of one of the principal characters, but that Lorca never got to see such a beautiful masterpiece performed! This is a must read for all you serious 'Spaniards' out there.
