Colourful and hilarious - Rated 5/5
Tarquins account of a year in Brick Lane was truley colourful. His written account drew the reader into his world and time. Emotional aspect from his own personal life complicated his moments of hardship with some of the characters he came across. His adventure and exploration of the area really captures the reader and entices one to go and find out for themselves of some of the intricare experiences he mentions. My favouritie charachter has to be Mr Ali, his quotes are legendary. A Bangladeshi who is more cockney then cockney's themselves. Imagine a man who wears a mosque hat who goes to the Old Vic!! Each charachter has their own story and account and how they affected Tarquin. The charahcters are turely colourful and the book makes a fantastic read which people can relate to.

Will the real Brick Lane ... - Rated 5/5
Amusing, affectionate, and very human - a really marvellous account of a year living in Brick Lane.

Salaam brick Lane - Rated 3/5
Fantastic book Having come from East London I Can relate to what the author is saying. Very true things are stated in this book about the dramatic changes of the area to the constant changing of things what is left of the old East End,a must read for anybody. I couldnt put the book down and I will be reading it again soon.

A joy to read !! - Rated 5/5
I just totally loved this book. It's magic is in that the author gives an excellent description of the area as it is now, as well as giving a historical account of the East End - but without is being a historical tome. Humour is never far from the surface even in the most difficult of situations and the characters are brought to life so vividly that you imagine you are in the same room as them or talking to them personally. Everything about this book made me want to read more and in fact I was a bit sad when I finished it. Many close friends of mine are Asian and I feel I actually "know" most of the characters that appear in this book from the people I have met in real life.

Excellent - a joy to read - Rated 5/5
This book was one of those that you just did not want to put down.It was informative without being over detailed with history. It brought to life the lives of people who you may not come across again. Solly, for example tells us of the East End when it was a Jewish area, Sadie who is an old Jewish lady who has a very sad story, Naziz who is dertimed to learn despite objects in his way. We meet M and S and there money making efforts. We also meet Chalky who is an east end Del Boy. The book is peppered throughtout with intresting quotes and history of the East End. It also deals with the writers own furture with is Indian girlfriend who's "aunties" have a few idea on who she should marry. And you will enjoy the sayings of the slum landlord Mr Ali who provides us with some classic lines. It may also give you some insight into what it is like to be in the UK ilegally and give any insight into the cultures of the Bangladashi community.
