The birth of forensic biography perhaps... - Rated
What an amazingly well researched and written biography this is; all credit to Jeremy Reed for producing such an engaging and insightful biography on one of the most brilliant twentieth century women writers.
I have read most of the available novels and short stories of Anna Kavan and knowing as I do, how little information she left any future biographer with, I was sceptical about this book and had ignored it for some time, quite wrongly as I now must admit, the book is a treasure chest of information and brilliantly written by Jeremy Reed.
We know that before her death Anna Kavan destroyed all of her diaries and most of her correspondence and private papers except those covering the period July 1926 to November 1927, thus making the work of any biographer very hard work indeed and a daunting task to undertake. We know that her novels and short stories were largely autobiographical and it is this fact that endears her to so many faithful followers of her writing to this day. Her prose was amazing and the story of her life, laid out in her writing is fascinating. One gets to know Anna Kavan through her writing. Jeremy Reed has meticulously and I would say forensically analysed all of her available writing and the fragments of diaries that remain and gained as much information as is humanly possible from those who knew her well, including her publisher, Peter Owen and produced a true masterpiece in biography. He writes skilfully about her life and eclipses what we understand about her with clips from her novels to create a vivid portrait of Anna and her deeply troubled life. I feel that this could well be the birth of forensic biography, it is certainly the product of genius.
As a devotee of her writing I commend Jeremy Reed for producing a must read biography and I would say to anyone about to embark on the reading of Anna Kavan, this is a wonderful place to begin and even if you never read any of Anna's writings, this is a truly astonishing read.

This book is phenomenal. It meticulously details every aspect of Anna Kavan's life, and it provides psychological insights into her novels and paintings. This is one of the best books about Anna Kavan that I have ever read. It is also Jeremy Reed's best non-fiction work. Everyone should read this book.
