Book Details / Review - supplied by Amazon UK

A lazy and fat farmer spends all day in bed, eating chocolates and reading the newspaper, while his poor duck has to do all the work on the farm. One evening, the exhausted duck collapses in tears, to be comforted by chickens. The farm animals are very fond of the duck, and outraged by the farmer's behaviour, so they hatch a plan.

This engaging cross between Cinderella and George Orwell's Animal Farm, won the Smarties Book Prize, was British Book Awards Children's Illustrated Book of the Year and was also Highly Commended for the Kate Greenaway Medal. (Ages 4 to 8)--Lisa Gee

Customer Reviews

Lovely illustrations and great story... - Rated 5/5
My wee boy (2 yrs) and I love to read this at bed-time. The rhythm of the text goes along very nicely, and is simple enough for a toddler to follow along with the lovely pictures (reminiscent of his other favourite, 'We're Going on a Bear Hunt'). It reminds me of George Orwell, for obvious reasons, and tells a nice story of the fat farmer being evicted to make way for the animals - two legs bad!!!

A lovely story which appeals to a child's sense of fairness - Rated 5/5
A sensitive story about exploitation which will be understood by the very youngest of children: downtrodden Duck works for gluttonous, lazy Farmer until his friends plan a rebellion on his behalf. The language is lyrical, the illustrations beautiful, and my children loved it!

A super book to make children laugh. - Rated 5/5
I like this book because it has a happy ending. The farmer gets chased away. I liked the plot and the character farmer because he is fat and lazy.
