Not enough detail on the most important subjects - Rated
Every time I have read this book to look up something I needed more information on, I found it lacking in detail.
I also found the timetables rigid and impossible to adhere to.
Everything else in the book is simply common sense.
The final chapter on spirituality, including it's biblical quotations were quite disturbing, why would a child under one year old be concered with prayer.
There is nothing in this book you couldn't learn by attending your local evangelist free parent craft class.
Mainly geared towards formula feeding - Rated
There are both good and bad aspects to this book, but I feel very strongly that anyone interested in breastfeeding their baby should not buy this book or should ignore this section completely - I found much of the information and advice to be out of date, inaccurate and potentially disruptive to establishing breastfeeding - which could cause many women to give up. For example, suggesting that a hungry baby should be walked instead of fed if it wakes for its feed 'early' may be fine for formula fed babies but simply will not work if you want to breastfeed longer than a few weeks - growth spurts will cause a baby to be more hungry and babies having a growth spurt need to feed more often to increase 'supply', limiting feeding will have a negative impact on 'supply and demand' but this book ignores this, and acts as if the babies referred to are formula fed.
I found 'what to expect when you're breastfeeding...and what if you can't' invaluable and would advise this book instead for information about breastfeeding.
I pick it up again and again - Rated
I really needed help learning how to structure my baby's day - when to feed (so I didn't over or under feed her), when to put to sleep (so she got enough sleep for her age), bathtime - everything! This book really helped me. My daughter isn't one for hard and fast rules and this book offers guidelines in terms of scheduling, not rules. Rachel has some excellent tips and this book hs become so invaluable, i pick it up time and time again. I'm about to return to work and I'm confident that my daughter's now got a routine that's easy for any childminder to follow. A great book!
Handle with care! - Rated
This book is full of really useful information on the practical aspects of caring for a new baby and for that I was grateful BUT.. like another reviewer said, it gave me totally unrealistic expectations of what my baby would be. The routine guides contain such gems as "your baby should sleep until..." - yes, well, please tell her that! The shortfalls I found were in patchy guidelines on what to do with a baby who didn't do what Rachel said she should. In methods of sleep training, she says, if you've a baby of more than 3 months, you can do these things... so what do I do with a 4 week old please? Ultimately, I felt I'd failed in following these, and if I'd succeeded, I'd have had a baby who conformed to the routines and life would've been easy. This really put on the pressure. Congratulations to all those who followed this successfully, I am envious! But it didn't help me any.
Happy Baby - Happy Mum - Rated
I recommend this book to everyone when the opportunity arises.
I have an eight year old - so when I had another baby this year I thought I'd know what to do!! However when the endless crying and sleepless nights occured as they had with my other baby, I had to admit I didn't know what I was doing. I bought this book when bub was 3 months old and followed the easy guidlines set out, I couldn't believe how simple it was and how quick it worked!! Overfeeding had made my baby get a sore tummy and I had let him get continuously overtired. Now my baby hardly cries, he has a little routine, he sleeps through the night and Daddy and Mummy feel sane. Having bub in a routine also makes it easy to have him looked after by others. When I got a neck injury when my baby was 6 months old, and was unable to look after him, Daddy had to do everything - It was so easy for him, because our baby was in a routine.
I refer to this book every few months, so I can reassess what stage he's at. I know what's coming next. I love Rachel's advice; I knew when to give bub solids (based on weight at birth - which I wish I knew earlier - my boy was 9'1pounds!), when to try using training cups, when to drop feed etc
FANTASTIC BOOK!!!! A must read.
