Self-directed science for home educated kids! - Rated
My (home educated) son used this book and was able to just get on and follow the experiments without any help. If you are not imposing a curriculum on your kids then this books is a great resource, as it helps them learn, through having to think about why their experiments work (although it does explain too).
Incidentally, despite having no actual lessons or formal tuition throughout his home education (age 5 to 16) he then went on to take GCSEs in science subjects over a 8 month period and get A and B grades. In fact his tutor said she was amazed at his "depth of understanding" and that she had never had a student like him. Obviously I am not saying this book is responsible, but it certainly helped as it showed me that science does not require lots of expensive equipment; and it also made science something that was fun to do and could be done wherever you are, not just in a lab or classroom. Children are naturally curious about how things work and this book goes a long way to helping them find out.
Of the 2 or 3 books we used this was definitely the favourite and I'm glad to see it is still in print and available for more children to make sense of their world. I would recommend this book if you only buy one practical science book for the under 13's.
Kids will love this. - Rated
My 7 year old son absolutely loves this book and shows it to anyone who comes in the house. The experiments are easy to follow and mostly involve items from around the house. I give it the thumbs up, a fantastic idea to keep children busy on those rainy days!
