A good light-hearted, messy & funny story! - Rated
I haven't come across anything by Alexander McCall-Smith that I haven't liked yet. This is funny & would be a good entertaining story to read at bedtime. No boring bits!
It's the story of Nicky & John, who are living with their Aunt Rebecca, whilst their geologist parents are away studying volcanoes. Aunt Rebecca is okay, if a little strict, but she has some funny ways about her, and most peculiar of all is her inability to eat anything other than raw foods, like carrots, turnips and especially... onions. Nicky & John would just love to have something a bit more exciting every now and then, and dream of chips & choccy cake. And then of course, quite by accident, they discover spaghetti... and their fortunes take a turn for the better...
Good fun & well-written!
Fabulous and entertaining kids' literature - Rated
I read this with my two 6 yr old boys and we enjoyed it so much. It nicely demonstrates how doing a good deed is not always as straight forward as it initially would seem. The kids were desperate to read more each night - my boys and i definitely recommend it!
It's well-written fun. DoughNot miss it! - Rated
A really lovely story of children helping their friendly school janitor through the selling of doughnuts supplied through a pyramid of well-wishers - until they become over-run with doughnuts. It's a lovely story for boys or girls, and really great books for boys of this age seem to be hard to come by, and who could fail to get excited by the idea of being awash with delicious doughnuts? It's perfect to read aloud to a 6 year old, with just enough pictures to inspire their own imaginations, or for an older child to read to themselves. I also particularly recommend the Bubblegum Tree and the Popcorn Pirates for anyone who enjoys this.
