Deep - Rated 5/5
I must admit, I tried reading 'For Love' on a previous occasion, but just couldn't get into it. Unusually (for me), I gave up. However, I recently read 'While I Was Gone' by the same author and I couldn't put it down! On the strength of this, I decided to try 'For Love' again and I'm so glad I did! I really cannot think why I had such a problem in the first place! The story is very poignant, but without being mushy or over-sentimental. The central characters are Lottie, Cam (Lottie's brother) and Elizabeth (Lottie's childhood friend and Cam's ex-girlfriend/lover). Lottie has recently married Jack, following the death of his wife (through whose long illness they had a strong, passionate relationship), but the marriage doesn't seem to be going so well. Lottie feels that, although Jack's wife is gone, Jack is still in love with her, causing a shadow to cloud their own relationship. Lottie takes time out to go to her old childhood home to clear out her mother's belongings (now that her mother has been admitted to a home, suffering from Altzheimer's) and reflect upon whether there is a future for herself and Jack. Meanwhile, Elizabeth's marriage to Larry has broken up (following another of Larry's many affairs) and she has resumed her relationship with Cam, who has loved Elizabeth obsessively all his life. However, Larry has asked Elizabeth to come back to him and she has agreed, but Cam is not about to let go so easily again. Knowing that Elizabeth will not change her mind, Cam sets out to her house to make her stay. Elizabeth tries to intercept Cam by sending the nanny, Jessica, out to tell Cam that Elizabeth has already left. However, unbeknown to Elizabeth, Jessica has been drinking heavily and she steps out just as Cam is turning his car into Elizabeth's driveway. Following the accident (which kills Jessica) Cam is held for questioning, but is found to be blameless. However, soon after he is released, Cam disappears. Upon trying to find him, Lottie discovers truths about herself. She also discovers that others are not who she always believed them to be. This is a story of love, betrayal, lies and deception. Second time around, I simply could not put it down.

Not as good as Sue Millers previous books. - Rated 4/5
I am an avid fan of Sue Miller and after recently reading 'While I was gone' I could hardly wait for the release of 'For Love'. But I was disappointed in this book, the story dragged a bit, and I felt what could have been relayed in half a page often covered two or three pages. Lottie, the mail character was lovely, and one felt sympathy for her uneasiness regarding Jacks first wife. I thought Elizabeth was a bit unbelievable, also Cameron, Lotties brother. Worth reading, though, if only for Sue Millers style of writing.
