I bought this after reading previous reviews, and was very disappointed. The characters were one-dimensional, the plotting disjointed, and the ending seemed a bit of a cop out. There are wonderful bits - the tiny stones slowly filling the farmhouse and the magical house on stilts, for example - but for me they did not tie together into an interesting story. Not a patch on Susan Cooper, Alan Garner, or Jenny Nimmo's Snow Spider Trilogy for evoking the scariness and excitement of strange happenings in a realistic world.
Good to read to a group. Good to read on your own. - Rated
As a teacher, I would recommend this book as an appealing read for boys and girls across the junior age range (years 3 to 6.) Infants, too, seem fascinated by the attractive and stimulating website. This acts as an appetite-whetter by introducing characters and plot and sundry other goodies, while leaving room for the imagination to wonder and wander. There aren't many famous authors who are kind enough to answer youngsters' questions, but Susan Hill does and this makes children feel very special.
A true "grabs the imagination" book. - Rated
A truly lovely book, I read it to my 7 year old and every night we had "one more page". My 12 year old daughter also loved it as did my 13 year old son who is dyslexic and normally gives up a few pages into books. It's a fantastic story which makes you turn page after page just to see what happens.
My 7 year olds class at school are now reading it as their class book and even just a few pages in they are already engrossed.
A stunning story - Rated
This is my nine year old grandson's review: 'A spectacular story about a boy called Olly Brown from London who moves to an old house called Gullywith. But strange things are happening. What do the stones with strange markings on mean? Can the Tortoises help?
The battle for Gullywith enchanted me so much I didn't want to put it down.In every chapter there is excitement and adventure impending.Something amazing and unexpected will come in every chapter.'
