Edward Marston is the pseudonym of Keith Miles, a fairly prolific and extremely good writer of mainly Elizabethan and medieval mysteries. He has also written mysteries under his own name with both sporting and golf backgrounds. However it is primarily the books that take place earlier in history that I am interested in. He read modern history at Oxford and has had many jobs, including university lecturer, but fortunately for all his readers, he turned to the writing profession.
Araminta Jewell more than lives up to her name. She is one of the most beautiful women in London, but she is more than just a beauty, she is charming and witty and many would say the ideal woman. Even though she is now married to the dreary and none to handsome Sir Martin Culthorpe she still has many admirers among the rakes of London. Men who even now cannot give up the thrill of the chase and pursue her with a passion.
One of her most ardent pursuers is Henry, brother of architect Christopher Redmayne and although Christopher has heard much of Araminta from his brother his first meeting with her is at her first sitting for a portrait by the French artist Jean-Paul Villemot. However before the painting is finished her husband is brutally murdered. Joining forces with his brother and his friend and associate Constable Jonathan Bale Christopher sets out to try to discover the killer's identity. Was Sir Martin killed because of his shady dealings, or was the most beautiful woman in the whole of London the prize that someone was prepared to commit murder for?
