The Mushroom Man (Detective Inspector Charlie Priest Mystery) - Rated
Having read all Peter Robinsons books on Inspector Marsh (Books I could not put down). I came across Stuart Pawson
I have just finished the 2nd DI Charlie Priest Mysrery , I am hooked and have ordered 4 more books in the series.
Second book in the DI Charlie Priest Series - Rated
Stuart Pawson had a career as a mining engineer He followed this with a spell working for the probation service, before he became a full-time writer. He lives in the pleasant waterside village of Fairburn in Yorkshire. A well known haunt for bird watchers from far and wide.
Stuart Pawson has a gem of a character in Charlie Priest, a copper's copper with the tenacity of a bull terrier and the staying power of a steeple chaser. Not much gets past Charlie Priest and the books featuring him are a joy to read. The dry wit of the author transmitted through his lead character is typical of Yorkshire and his storylines are based on the way a detective would approach a case, rather than the crash bang wallop type writing of many so called crime writers.
This is one of the early offerings of the author, but his writing is consistently good right through from his earliest books to the present and not one has disappointed me so far. Living within a 10 mile radius of where most of the books are set is of course a benefit and makes them that little more atmospheric for me personally. However it would not matter if I lived in Timbuktu the books are still extremely readable and entertaining.
PS: The last time I looked the rhubarb sheds were still there.
Review of Stuart Pawson - Rated
Having read my way through Rankin. Robinson, Harvey, Hurley and Billingham, I didn't like the idea of a detective novel written primarily in the first person. However, Pawson creates a great character with a sense of humour, but I feel lacks a little depth, ie not quite enough about his own personal enviroment such as Rebus or Banks.
A Mystery and Some Humour - Rated
I like DI Charlie Priest and the series of books he features in - you get the ongoing police investigation type story line (here you actually get two for your money) and lots of humour too!
Not sure what the previous reviewer was on about though.
A poor example of the genre - Rated
When i started reading the book I was enjoying it. Unfortunately it then began to be very cliched and poorly written. There is also a nasty moral tone to the book. I won't be reading another of his books, there are far better Crime books about.
