Very old fashioned - Needs a complete update - Rated
I bought this to get more ideas on how to help with my 5 month old baby. Well to be honest, I dont think this book has been changed since it was first published. The photos are of people with extremely big hair from the 70s/80s. The drawings of equipment are old - the products used are something my mother would have used when I was a baby. Most of the information in the book is really dated and not something my health visitor would advise at all.
I am usually a big fan of Miriam Stoppard books. I think she is a very clever, very helpful lady...but this book has been returned. It needs to be brought into the 21st century.
The comprehensive, friendly guide for new mums ! - Rated
I bought this book shortly afgter my baby was born and found it invaluable. It contains the most basic information about caring for your child, and yet also tells you a great deal more, in a friendly, sympathetic style which doesn't intimidate, and always encourages. I think the most interesting and valuable part of the book are its well laid out chapters on baby development, which tell you (roughly) when your child should be doing what, and also, how to help them reach each huge milestone.A wonderful information text, i'm buying it for all my friends!
An essential guide - Rated
This book was considered essential when I gave birth to my third son 14 years ago. I don't know how I managed without it with my previous children! I was very impressed with the clear guidance on infant development, the practical information on childcare as well as a quick and easy guide to topics such as illnesses and how to treat them, that I recently bought the updated version for my grandaughter's parents. It answers the most basic questions such as 'why are babies born with blue eyes' to 'when will my child start to walk'. Questions that are obvious but not readily answered. It has a straightforward format which allows you dip in and quickly find very useful and down-to-earth information. I would recommend it to anyone looking for a practical guide to parenthood.
