A Love Story - Rated
This is the first book by Sparks that I have read and am pleased that this is also his first published book, as I shall certainly read more, and I do like to read and feel how an author grows and gains confidence with each book written. The Notebook is an enjoyable and tender love story which is very easy to get into and can be read in one or two sittings. The book is well written, the plot is well thought out and the story content although not fast paced, certainly has you turning the pages. The only downside is that the book is not great value for money in that there are only 221 pages of fairly large print - I know the `Product Details' shown above says 272 pages but, if this publication is like mine, the rest of the book will be the first chapter of another book.
A bit too soppy - Rated
Although this book is well written, I found it quite soppy and repetitive. However having read 'the guardian' my faith in this author has been restored. I haven't seen the film but on the basis of the book I am not in a rush to see it!
a wonderful story - Rated
When you read Nicolas Sparks - the author - you think of kitschy, romantic and unrealistic love-stories.
But in that case it is wrong, the notebook is a beautiful, passionate, wonderful and great story about endless love.
It's about that kind of love who everybody is dreaming of.
The story is about Noah and Allie, who fell in love with each other during the time they had been teenagers.
Then Allie moves away... 20 years later... just before her marriage with a popular lawyer, she cannot stop thinking of this summer 20 years ago when another boy stole her heart.
Because of that, she decides to search him and to meet him the last time before she becomes the wife of another man.
But then everything is different and she has to decide - the man who everyone wants her to marry - or her secret big love...
The story is on the one side beautiful to read and fascinating, but on the other side a little bit sad and you maybe will cry because it touches your heart so hard, but it's an experience which you will remember your whole life.
It's written in a very romantic style including lots of poetic elements and also extracts of wonderful and fitting poems.
I would give the book five stars, because I love it and wasn't able to stop reading it.
It's not unfounded a bestseller and one of the best stories which ever have existed and not only all Americans loved it, it was translated in 30 languages and published all over the world.
It's simply wonderful and from searching, finding, loosing and finding again the greatest love of all.
It gives us hope in this time, when almost every second marriages fail and people get divorced.
Nevertheless, everyone should dare the adventure of love, because it also could end like in this story.
The ending of the book also shows us how strong love is, stronger than for example diseases and deaths and other problems and sometimes even miracles are possible.
All in all this is a must read book!

THE NOTEBOOK is the romance novel of this generation!
Ali and Noah are two very different people, or characters, depending on how you think about it. Ali is from a wealthy family that thinks very highly of themselves, and Noah was raised by his father and has had to work for every penny he has. Which is not much. The characters come alive and it is almost like you personally know both of them. It's amazing! Ali takes a vacation to New Bern where Noah lives. As the summer progresses, their relationship grows stronger and stronger and they fall in love. They fight all the time, but for some crazy reason they are madly in love.
Then the summer ends.
Noah and Ali are devastated that she has to leave. Her parents won't let her stay because they think that she is too good for him. It's absolutely devastating. He writes her letters, which she never receives because her mother intercepts and keeps them. She thinks that Noah has forgotten her.
Then World War II begins.
Noah is deployed for a couple of years and comes home when the war is over. During this time, Ali gets engaged to Lon, a lawyer who her parents approve of because he is socially acceptable. Noah buys an old plantation and fixes it up, and he and the house wind up in the newspaper. So Ali decides that she needs to go see Noah before she gets married, even though she hasn't seen him in fourteen years. At their reunion, they realize that they never fell out of love.
Read the book to find out who Ali chooses, Noah or Lon!
