a taint on the unconscious - Rated 1/5
I can't remember what possessed me to pick up this book, it's not normally something I would go for but for the most part I found the story kept up a certain interest. I skipped of over a lot of totally unnecessary meandering and plainly dull conversations in order to get to the end quicker and that process never hindered the flow of the story, as this book could have been hundred or two hundred pages shorter.

My real problem with this book was not with the trashy Mills and Boon like love story or the total over use of cliches, that I could skip over but what I found unforgivable was the dark change near the end, what started out as a harmless ITV like period drama turned in to a dark sordid torture seen near the end not very long but totally uncalled for and left me feeling sick, if your look for something light and airy this not it. Others who have read this awful, awful book and call it a "masterpiece" I would urge you to read The Shadow of the Wind | Carlos Ruiz Zafón a real coming of age book that has no elements of sordid, crypto, torture porn, like this tripe. If read this book will remain a taint on the unconscious avoid at all costs!

Fantastic! Fantastic! Fantastic! - Rated 5/5
This novel was an absolute joy to read. The characters were so real and I was totally transported to that place and time in history. It was fascinating to see how Russian, Chinese and English cultures merged in this book. Very beautifully written as well. In some ways it reminded me of "Doctor Zhivago".

I would highly recommend it to anyone who loves literature of the best quality. Congratulations to the author!

Read with a sick bag handy - Rated 1/5
The last book I disliked as much as this one was Victoria Hislop's The Island.

I was intrigued by the setting and looking forward to learning more about a place and time that I know little about. So the hyperventilatingly sacharine prose was a huge disappointment. This is nauseating romantic tripe with more cliches than a Mills & Boon. The biggest treat was the thrill of chucking it on the bonfire as soon as I got to the last page. Yuck yuck yuck.

Truly a Masterpiece!!! - Rated 5/5
Truly speechless. This book as left me reeling with satisfaction. Kate Furnivall has written an epic masterpiece. I cannot describe how wonderful this book is. It will take pride of place on my bookshelf.

The historic Chinese culture is nothing I knew about - and quite frankly had never appealed to me before. I almost picked this book up by accident. It was an offer of buy 3 for 2 at Waterstones and it was the only reason why i bought it and I must say It's the BEST thing I have done in a long time. I learnt so much about not only China and it's culture and political history - but I felt a sense of realisation of love and loyalty. Astounding!!

Fantastic novel! - Rated 5/5
If you like The Bronze Horseman by Paullina Simons you will love this one. It's one of those books that are hard to put down. I can't wait for the sequel coming out next year to find out more about Lydia and the other characters.
