Amazing! - Rated The best book I read in 2005 was Tom Holland's feted PERSIAN FIRE. The best book I read in 2007 was Bartlet's THE LAST CRUSADE. I have been fascinated by the crusades for a number of years now and I have read most of the major titles published in the last ten years but this one has to be one of the most informative and enjoyable that I have read. Bartlet's description of battle is UNBELEIVABLE and yet his attention to history is never diluted. He is remarkably sensitve to the Catholicism, history, and drama of the event and his depiction of LouisIX is almost affectionate without being 'too much.' If you read one book about the Crusades this one strikes the best balance between a good story and a good history. Fabulous. I can't recomend it enough. Happy reading!!!

I have been fascinated by the crusades for a number of years now and I have read most of the major titles published in the last ten years but this one has to be one of the most informative and enjoyable that I have read. Bartlet's description of battle is UNBELEIVABLE and yet his attention to history is never diluted.
