Customer Reviews

recently read it for a second time, loved it more...if possible - Rated 5/5
i bought the book last year when in the states & thought it could be a book to read on train & planes etc. but i literally could not put it down. its as wonderfully warm as it is sad, you really come to sympathise with the main character Doug but also want to shake him out of his misery. as he starts to, not really overcome, but manage his grief in a series of hilarious events and the realisation that everyone around him is grieving some sort of loss, you become more and more attached to him & his family wanting them to suceed even if you dont really know at what.

i may have given abit too much away but all i can say is after twice reading this book i loved even more then second time round & really recommend it to everyone. its best to read this Tropper book first, as i found it gives you a greater understanding of how his characters live & grow.

Absorbing and brilliant - Rated 5/5
This book tackles the difficult subject of bereavement. Doug has become a widower at 29 and he is not ready to face the world. Meanwhile family and friends want to help him but don't know what to say. I read this book in about three days flat and was completely absorbed in it. As well as coping with his bereavement, Doug has a father with dementia, a teenage step-son coping with the loss of his mother, a pregnant twin sister going through a bad patch with her husband and another sister preparing to get married. There are some sad moments and also some hilarious episodes in this utterly gripping novel. Definitely worth a read.

Brilliant! - Rated 5/5
One of the best books I've read. Perfectly written to keep you hooked from beginning to end, I definitely recommend it.

Couldn't put it down - Rated 5/5
I am not a person that can read a book in a day, it usually takes me four or five days to get through a good book. That said, I devoured this book in a day, I could not put it down - it was brilliant.

Beautifully written, it was rather bittersweet - powerfully sad, it also made me laugh out loud. It is a book that i will read repeatedly, and I have already insisted that my family and friends read it. AMAZING!

perceptive and uplifting - Rated 5/5
I thought this was a great read. Whilst dealing sensitvely and authentically with the aftermath of an unexpected death, it manages to deliver an overall optomistic message with a light and humourous touch. A lovely book. REad it and smile
