Enjoy This Fascinating Chronicle - Rated 5/5
An amazing tour de force that traces the Arbuthnot family’s argumentative, trail-blazing migration from parochial, rural beginnings in England to a very different life in deep city America. Set in the last few years of the 1890s, Kathy and Calvert Arbuthnot, sensing the impending decline of the malt liquorice industry and tired of the oppressive Lincolnshire flatlands, decide to use their inheritance to migrate west to New York and a new life.

However, once installed in their new lodgings the family begins to lose direction in an unfamiliar environment. Ever increasing inter-child bitterness focussed mainly around the sinister rocking horse Pongo. Calvert’s baroque drinking practices exacerbated by chronic unemployment and Kathy’s steadily escalating dependence on speed crochet techniques seem to have the relocated family on a downward spiral towards destruction until…

Enter the mysterious Father Brannigan the tattooed, philanthropic cleric seemingly Hell bent (or Heaven sent) on helping Calvert to an early, whisky-soaked grave whilst simultaneously wooing the shy yet bored Kathy with his deft cross-stitch. Even the children are lulled to sleep by his hypnotic rosary rattling so he can enjoy a prolonged rock atop Pongo.

This kind of literary recipe only comes along once or twice in a generation, assemble ingredients and place in a reading oven set to ‘high’. Remove, leave to cool on the rack of intrigue and serve warm on a bed of enjoyment. Set to become a timeless classic.

Also has some useful information on managing library staff in it somewhere.
