After reading Mario Reading's brilliant Dictionary of Cinema, I was curious to see what sort of novel he would write. Well, I couldn't put it down. This is a love story with a difference. The action moves between Cornwall, 1960s St Tropez, and Paris in May 1968, during the student riots, and the love story spans something like thirty years. Two cousins fall in love when they are very young, then go on to have a passionate affair. A terrible misunderstanding occurs, and they are torn apart for many, many years. Then the man nearly dies of cancer, and decides that he will try and rekindle the old love that has never really left him. This is a brilliant evocation of childhood, as well as a bitter-sweet tale of love and betrayal, and the complications families can cause. I really, really, reccommend it. It should be a bestseller. It would be sensational on the TV
