Would have been 5 stars but.... - Rated
I thoroughly enjoyed this book, was captivated by the setting, the characters (especially Benjy and Francis) and the story. Like other reviewers, it was one I picked up a while ago but never quite got round to getting past the synopsis on the the back cover! What a shame, because had I read it immediately, I would probably have bought several more Catherine Alliots by now! However, just at the point that I was getting 'lost' in the story, there was one glaring error that suddenly snapped me out of 'the zone':- Rupert called on Hetty at the farmhouse in Kent having just landed at Andover 'about 30 miles away' - There is no airport at Andover (military or otherwise) and Andover is in Hampshire - at least three counties away! This may seem like nitpicking but this one paragraph detracted from the pleasure of a book that until then had me believing every word - Sorry Catherine, it lost you a star! Otherwise I loved it!
A cut above the competition - Rated
I read a lot of 'chick lit' and find much of it can be rather predictable and samey. I can't honestly report that this book was not quite predictable but it is a cut above the rest of the 'chick lit' out there. It is funny and charming. I liked the characters and cared what happened to them.
It is easy to read and dip in and out of, perfect for a holiday. A light hearted look at how sometimes we all misread situations and jump to conclusions when we don't have all the facts, this book is the one to read if you want a book which doesn't take itself too seriously. I guarantee it will make you laugh!
Very good - Rated
For some reason I left this on my bookshelf for ages before finally picking it up- maybe because the plot on the back sounded a little far-fetched, maybe because it seems quite long. I don't know and can honestly say if I knew what the story was like I'd have picked this up much sooner.
It is a very engaging plot with some excellent twists. Very humorous in places but also touching, this is a real chick lit novel with a great plotline running through.
It follows the tribulations of Herietta Tate, a mother returning to work for the first time in years. The charcter is well built up and very engaging. It really feels as if we are right there with her at times which shows the writing must be good. The time passed so quickly when I was reading this that I stayed up late into the night on several occassions. It really does draw you in and, in my opinion at least, is a real page turner. Give it a try, it's defintely worth it.
Enjoyed This! - Rated
My wife gave me this to read as a break from my normal style of reading which is mainly Sci/Fi & Fantasy. I enjoyed it and it was very light and easy to read. It flowed well with a few unexpected turns.
Easy, chilled out read - Rated
I found this book very easy and relaxing to read. The story I found is a bit over the top, but once you're reading it you will actuall get into it and not find it not over the top ! This is the first novel I have read by Catherine Alliott and it certainly will not be the last as I've been out and bought 3 more ! Well worth a read in my opinion.
